It’s a good question – and an honest one that deserves an honest answer. So I’m not going to tell you that Reiki is right for everyone, because it isn’t, and anyone who tells you otherwise isn’t being straight with you. Instead, let me describe what Reiki actually is, and what it asks of you, so you can feel for yourself whether it’s something you’d like.
First, what Reiki actually is
Reiki is a gentle, complementary practice that suports wellbeing – an hour of rest, in a quiet room, where nothing is asked of you. It is not a treatment for any particular condition, and it makes no promise to fix or cure anything. It sits alongside your medical care, never in place of it. It is not alternative, but complementary care that supports wellbeing.
So “is Reiki right for me?” isn’t really a question about what you’re dealing with. It’s a question about whether this kind of quiet, restful space is something you’d value right now.
Reiki might be for you if…
Reiki might be for you if you’re tired, and craving a little rest. If you’re curious about gentler ways of caring for yourself. If you’d welcome an hour where there’s nothing to do, nothing to fix, and nothing to perform. If you like the idea of being quietly looked after, without having to explain or talk it through. If you’d like something that sits alongside your medical care, rather than instead of it. Or if, honestly, you’re simply curious to see what it’s like.
None of those ask you to be a particular kind of person, or to believe anything. They only ask that the idea of stillness appeals to you.
Reiki might not be for you – at least not right now – if…
It might not be the right fit if you’re looking for a treatment for a specific problem. Reiki isn’t that, and I’d never want you to arrive expecting it to be. It might not be right if you want a guaranteed result – no honest practitioner can promise you one, and I won’t. And it might not be right if the thought of lying still and doing nothing feels unbearable rather than welcome just now. That’s completely okay – Reiki practice will still be here another time.
Saying this plainly matters to me. I’d far rather you came knowing exactly what Reiki is than arrived hoping it’s something it’s not. Your experience of the practice will help you understand what Reiki is.
What it asks of you
Almost nothing. You don’t need to prepare, or to believe in anything, or to understand how it works. You don’t even have to talk, if you’d rather not. You only have to be willing to rest for a while.
The only way to really know
You can read about Reiki all you like -I did – and I hope these pages have helped – but in the end it’s a felt experience, and reading can only take you so far. The only way to truly know whether it’s right for you is to try it once, and notice how you feel afterwards. There’s no commitment beyond that, and no wrong answer. If it’s for you, you’ll know. And if it isn’t, that’s perfectly alright too.
