One of the first questions people ask about this Japanese practice is the most natural one: what does it actually feel like?

The honest answer is that it varies – from one person to the next, and even from one session to the next. Some people notice something meaningful straight away. For others, anything they notice unfolds quietly, in the hours or days that follow. There is no right way to experience it, and nothing you need to feel for it to have been worthwhile.

What people often describe

Many people describe a deepening sense of relaxation, sometimes quite early in a session – a settling, the way the body lets go when it finally feels safe to. Some drift toward sleep and surface again feeling quiet and rested. Others notice gentle physical sensations: warmth, coolness, a soft tingling, or a feeling of heaviness as they sink into the table.

For some, there is an emotional softening – a quiet sense of release, or simply feeling more like themselves again. Others describe a kind of mental stillness, a pause in the usual noise. And some feel very little during the session itself, and notice the difference only later, in how they sleep, or how they carry the day that follows.

How much you notice is not a measure of how much it mattered. Everyone’s experience is their own.

How it’s described in clinical settings

This quality of rest is part of why Reiki has found a place in hospital wellbeing programs. The Cleveland Clinic, describing Reiki within its own patient programs, says a session *”can help ease stress and tension and help support the body to create an environment for physical, emotional and mental healing.”*¹

An honest note

It is worth saying plainly: Reiki is a complementary practice. It sits alongside medical and psychological care, never in place of it. Individual experiences vary, and no particular outcome can be promised. What it offers, more than anything, is an hour of genuine rest -and for many of us, that alone is rare enough to be worth knowing about.
